Jeremy Richard pulled win out of his hat Friday when he threw 80 yards successfully despite a weak shoulder.  The Trojans all star QB was struggling in the first half as the Buzzard's defense repeatedly dogged his attempts to get the ball to wide receivers   John Marrelli and Tyler Jones, sometimes putting Richard down so hard he'd forget where he was.

After a somber half-time with coach Johnston, the team came back with a renewed vigor and started to put some yardage on the board, scoring twice in the third quarter, and again in the fourth.

Kudos to Peter Smith, John Pomeroy and Manfred Gibson who gave stellar performances and were able to keep Buzzard's Linemen off of Richard long enough to let him get those passes away.

Next week, the Trojans will be facing off the Innisfil Giants, a contest that is sure to test that arm again, as well as the patience of the receivers.

Here you will find information related to how, when and why decisions are made around bus cancellations and early dismissals related to inclement weather, as well as information regarding indoor recess (nutrition breaks) due to weather conditions.

While the decision to cancel buses occurs somewhat regularly throughout the school year based on weather and road conditions, the closure of schools is an infrequent and extraordinary measure. A decision to close schools is not taken lightly but is made when student safety and staff safety is at potential risk.

Decisions sometimes happen quickly and can be different across the district based on different circumstances or conditions. The Board makes our decisions with the best information it has at the time. The Board’s guiding principle in making these decisions is always the safety of students, staff and volunteers working at our schools and centres.

The Board appreciates your patience and understanding as, together, we deal with whatever challenges may arise during winter months. Below, you will find specific information regarding busing, early dismissal/school closures and emergency contact information requirements.

Busing:

Busing is coordinated by Tri-Board Transportation Services, a student busing consortium formed by the Limestone District School Board, Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board & Hastings & Prince Edward School Board. Tri-Board operates bus routes across the region in Napanee, Kingston & The Islands, Sharbot Lake, Belleville, Picton, and Bancroft.

Parents may sign up for direct notification of delays and cancellations on [ null://www.triboard.on.ca/ ]Tri-Board’s website. Click on the tab “Delays and Cancellations” near the top of the webpage. There is also other pertinent information regarding delays and cancellations for parents/guardians at this location including a listing of local radio stations that will air cancellations and delays. 

Bus drivers, operators and municipal roads officials assess weather and road conditions between 4-5 a.m. on school days using a variety of data including accredited weather forecasters such as Environment Canada. They then report any conditions or issues that might affect the safe transportation of students and report these to Tri-Board Transportation to make a determination on busing around 5:30/6 a.m. Sometimes decisions change, or are made later than 5:30/6 a.m., as conditions and available information changes.

Tri-Board then notifies affected school boards and families via its website, email, text message and dedicated cancellation/delay Twitter account [ https://twitter.com/@BusDelayNCancel ]@BusDelayNCancel. Parents may also follow Tri-Board Student Transportation Services Inc. on [ https://www.facebook.com/Tri-Board-Student-Transportation-Services-Inc-665794233435752/?fref=ts ]Facebook. This information is also widely shared on local radio stations, cable TV and through various school board communications tools such as Board websites and, in the case of Limestone, via its Twitter account [ https://twitter.com/@LimestoneDSB ]@LimestoneDSB where possible. Should a system-wide shutdown be recommended, Tri-Board then consults with the Directors of Education with area school boards to determine a plan of action and any required contingencies. Tri-Board makes its decisions based on the best information it has at the time.

Schools remain open when buses are cancelled unless otherwise stated. When buses are cancelled in the morning, they are cancelled for the entire day. If children are dropped off at school when buses are cancelled, they must be picked up by a parent or guardian or alternate approved contact person at the end of the school day.

Early Dismissal /School Closures:

Early dismissal of students and possible resulting school closures are uncommon. A decision to close a school or schools is an extraordinary measure when student and/or staff safety is in potential jeopardy.

Sometimes, closures are the result of extended interruptions or failures of infrastructure, utilities or other building systems. Sometimes, closures are required when weather, road or other conditions might affect the safe transportation of students or staff – regardless of whether that transportation is by school bus, by vehicle, or by foot. Walkers, for example, might also be at risk should they have to contend with slippery sidewalks and/or the crossing of slippery roads and intersections.

Schools usually stay open when buses are cancelled. Schools remain open because some schools have many walking students or students who are dropped off by parents/guardians. Also, many parents do not have emergency/alternate child-care arrangements for children if schools are closed.

Decisions on community use of schools (school rentals) are made on a case-by-case basis, however, usually if buses are cancelled, community use is also cancelled. It is best to confirm with individual schools.

Emergency contact information:

In the event of early dismissal and/or school closures, it is imperative that schools have updated emergency contact information for all students. Families are asked to fill out emergency contact information at the beginning of the school year. It is essential that any changes to this information are provided to the school as soon as possible, if and when it changes. This includes change to address, telephone (home, work and cell phones), and those appointed by parents/guardians as alternate emergency contacts.

Schools must be able to reach parents/guardians to confirm that students are able to take the bus or walk home in emergency situations. Schools cannot do this without updated contact information. Also, it is important families think carefully about who they choose as an emergency contact. It should be someone who is able to make a decision regarding your child(ren) and/or pick up that child from school as soon as possible should you be unavailable.

While some school staff remain on site to ensure all students are bused and/or picked up safely, the safe arrival home of staff is also an important consideration.

Indoor Recess:

Schools within the Limestone District School Board follow the guidance of KFL&A Public Health. When a cold weather alert or warning is issued, each school will take appropriate precautions that may include keeping children indoors for recess. Generally, if the temperature is forecast to be -25C or -28C with the windchill, children are kept inside. The Principal, however, always has discretion. It's important to note, also, that decisions are made on a case-by-case basis as weather conditions can vary greatly within our district.

Two longtime community members of the Limestone District School Board's Audit Committee were recently recognized for their years of service.

At the November 2016 Audit Committee meeting, Trustee Laurie French, who serves as Chair of the Committee, thanked Mr. Adam Young and Mr. Ron Betournay for six years of service as non-board members on the committee. Both gentlemen volunteered their time and service for two consecutive three-year terms as permitted under provincial regulation.

The Board will soon advertise for two new non-board Audit Committee members. Eligibility for appointment is open to non-employee of the Board with accounting, financial management or other relevant business experience that would enable he or she to understand the accounting and auditing standards applicable to the Board

Three of the Limestone District School Board's program will come together under one roof next week. The Board's two alternative sites, Second Chance and Streetsmart, will amalgamate in the former Frontenac Public School building at 38 Cowdy St. The building will also be the new home of the Katarokwi Aboriginal School.

The sites will remain open in their present locations until end of day, Thursday, Nov. 24 and will re-open at their new Cowdy Street location on Monday, Nov. 28.

The existing Second Chance phone number (613.548.3462) and fax number (613.548.3361) will relocate to the new location. The existing phone lines for the Aboriginal School and Streetsmart will redirect callers to the Second Chance number.

Online survey for Yarker & Odessa Pupil Accommodation Review

The Pupil Accommodation Review, or PAR, for Yarker Family School and Odessa Public School is now under way. The Board of Trustees approved the review at its regular meeting on October 19, 2016 following a recommendation from the School Enrolment/School Capacity Committee of the Whole Board (SE/SCC). The review follows the receipt of the Initial Staff Report Regarding Yarker F.S. and Odessa P.S., which was presented to the SE/SCC on September 28, 2019. Staff have recommended that Yarker Family School be closed and students relocated to Odessa Public School. Yarker Family School was identified as a school with low enrolment and facility utilization rates now and into the projected future. The goal is reviewing the schools through a PAR is to: Maintain or improve the curricular, extra curricular and social opportunities for the students; Maximize the use of Board and Ministry of Education resources – staff, facilities (reduce unused space) & transportation; and Reduce the financial liability of the Board and the Ontario Ministry of Education. Following the approval of a review, a Pupil Accommodation Review Committee (PARC) is established. The PARC, which includes parents from the affected schools, serves as the official conduit for information sharing between the Board and school communities. It may comment on the Initial Staff Report and may seek clarification. The PARC may also provide options other than those in the Initial Staff Report as long as supporting rationale is included. The PARC will include four working committee meetings and two public meetings within a six-month period. At PARC Working Meetings, SE/SCC Meetings and the Board Meeting the public is welcome to attend as observers.   At the PARC Public Meetings, all of the public in attendance have opportunity to be engaged in discussions about the Initial Staff Report and provide feedback that will be communicated to the Board through the Final Staff Report. The Board held a public meeting on November 30. Parents and members of the community who were unable to attend the meeting are invited to participate in this online survey. Click here to participate. The survey will remain open until January 20, 2019. This information, along with information from the November 30, 2016 Public Meeting, will be forwarded to the PARC and posted to the Board's website. This information will also be included in the Community Consultation section of the Final Staff Report to be presented to the Board of Trustees at a School Enrolment/School Capacity Committee of the Board on April 24, 2019. Final decisions on the report are tentatively scheduled to be made at the May 17, 2019 Board Meeting. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. The Final Staff Report will be delivered to the SE/SCC in the spring of 2017. The SE/SCC will hold a meeting to allow the public to make formal delegations concerning the Final Staff Report. The Ministry of Education is looking to develop a shared vision of how we can best support the well-being of all students, in collaboration with parents, students, educators and administrators, counselors, social workers, and community partners across the province.

Work is happening every day in local school communities to promote and support the well-being of students. At the same time, we also know that there are significant challenges and more work is necessary to support the well-being of all Ontario learners. The Ministry of Education wants to learn from, and build on the successful work underway, as we collectively move forward on our shared goal of promoting student well-being.

By drawing on the knowledge of those who have done important work over many years to foster well-being among our students, we will strive to establish a common understanding of what promoting well-being means in schools, identify challenges and opportunities for improving supports for well-being and consider how we will know our impact on well-being to best guide our future efforts.

The Ministry is also looking for feedback via an online survey. The survey is open until January 15, 2016.

The Ministry has developed several resources, including a discussion document, fact sheet for parents, and an engagement paper, to provide background on deepening our understanding of well-being in Ontario schools and how best to support it. With your feedback and with contributions from partner ministries, the Ministry will develop a provincial student well-being framework for K-12, that will reflect our shared commitments and the positive outcomes we want for all our students.
